5 ways to maintain friendships

Find yourself travelling often?

Studies have indicated that frequent business travel takes a toll on all kinds of relationships, which, as social beings, we are heavily dependent on.

If you travel more than you are at home, how do you show your friends you care and keep them close?

The solution is simply in staying connected, and letting them know you’re there for them, even when you’re physically away. Thankfully, this generation of apps and social media has made this process very simple, you just have to make the effort.

Less is more
Let’s face it. In today’s world, who has the time to read or write long emails? It’s great to get nostalgic about the good old days of having pen pals (if you’re that old ;), but now all that it takes sometimes for someone to tell them you’re thinking of them, is a quick text or picture, maybe about something in your travels that reminds you of them!

Stay (at least somewhat) present on group texts and emails
So how many Whatsapp groups are you a part of? At least 5? And if people on that group are in different time zones, you may be getting messages 24X7.
Chances are that you have a hectic work schedule on your trip, so if you don’t have the time to constantly be a part of the chats, put them on mute! At least once in a while just check the messages, and respond to the latest conversation with some additions of your own. In the chat, in the mind 😉

Listen and care
When a friend tells you about some stuff they have going on, or events in their lives, pay close attention, and be in touch with them about it. Asking them the latest update, how they are feeling, if there’s anything you can do, give them your best wishes. A strong memory not your strongest asset? Keep alarms on your phone to check up on your friend.

Phone calls
Sometimes, you can simply drop them a call to say hello. If you choose the right apps, it really doesn’t cost you that much. A 5 minute call goes a long way to tell a friend that you care even from a distance, especially if it’s about an important event of their life.

Send a postcard
Connecting nowadays to humans is almost synonymous with being digital, there is still a charm of sending a postcard from a land far away, with a few handwritten lines. A sure-shot way to bring a smile on your friend’s face 😉

Of course there are many more ways of staying in touch! And even if you try your best, some friendships may fade away. And that’s ok, because as they say, the ones who stay, matter. And the ones who matter, stay. So treasure them, stay close to them and grow with them, no matter which part of the world you are in!
